What grows after the fire

When a forest burns, the ground doesn’t stay bare. Within weeks, pioneer species appear - fast-growing plants that thrive in disturbed soil and full sunlight. They stabilise the ground, add organic matter, and create shade. In their shade, different species establish - ones that couldn’t survive in the bare, exposed aftermath but can thrive in the conditions the pioneers created. These mid-succession species grow taller, shade out the pioneers, and create conditions for yet another wave. Over decades, the forest rebuilds - but through a sequence, not all at once.

This is ecological succession: a predictable pattern of change where each stage creates the conditions for the next. The principle applies far beyond ecology. After a disruption - a restructuring, a market crash, a personal crisis - systems don’t jump straight to a new stable state. They go through stages, each one creating the conditions that enable the next.

Understanding succession changes how you respond to disruption. The first thing that grows back isn’t the final state - it’s the pioneer phase. The pioneers aren’t the destination. They’re the bridge. Trying to skip to the mature state immediately usually fails, because the conditions for the mature state don’t exist yet. You have to let each phase do its work.

The stages that can’t be skipped

After a company restructuring, the first phase is often chaotic but energetic - informal leaders emerge, ad hoc processes fill the gaps, people self-organise around immediate needs. This is the pioneer phase. It’s messy but functional. The mistake is either trying to lock in this phase (it’s not sustainable) or trying to impose mature-phase structure immediately (the conditions aren’t ready for it). The healthy response is to let the pioneers do their work while gradually building the infrastructure for the next phase.

After a divorce, the immediate aftermath is the cleared ground. The first things that grow are survival mechanisms - new routines, new living arrangements, new ways of managing daily life. These are pioneers - they work for now but aren’t the long-term answer. Over months and years, these are replaced by more developed structures - a stable new home, genuine new friendships (not just mutual support networks), a redefined sense of identity. Trying to jump straight to “the new me” skips the stages the psyche needs to build on.

After a market disruption, the first new entrants are often simple, scrappy, and imperfect - minimum viable products, opportunistic startups, quick adaptations. These pioneers fill the gaps the disruption created. Over time, they’re replaced by more sophisticated offerings that build on what the pioneers revealed about the new market. The pioneers mapped the territory. The successors settle it.

Respecting the sequence

When supporting a system through recovery, ask: what phase of succession is this? Pioneer phases need speed, flexibility, and tolerance for imperfection. Mid-succession needs investment, structure-building, and growing standards. Mature phases need maintenance, refinement, and attention to the accumulating rigidity that eventually triggers the next cycle.

Don’t try to skip phases. The mature state can’t be imposed on pioneer conditions. The pioneers create the soil, the shade, the stability that the next phase requires. Rushing through succession produces fragile, shallow results that collapse at the first new disturbance.

Do anticipate the transitions. Each phase creates the conditions for the next, but the transition doesn’t happen automatically. It often needs support: resources to help the next wave establish, gradual withdrawal of support for the pioneers as they’re replaced, and acceptance that what worked in one phase won’t work in the next.
